Discover Carros de Foc, the most popular trek in the Pyrenees!

Carros de Foc is a circular trekking route that connects the 9 shelters of the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. The high mountain itinerary, born and devised by the guards in 1987, has been a success for participants from the first moment and has become the most popular trekking route in the Pyrenees.

There are 74 km of route and 4,850 m of positive elevation gain, which, covering the regions of L’Alta Ribagorça, Pallars Jussà, Pallars Sobirà and Val d’Aran, allowing you to contemplate some of the most beautiful and spectacular landscapes in the Pyrenees as the Sant Maurici lake, with the emblematic Encantats in the background, the Colomèrs cirque, the Besiberris, the Aigües Tortes plain, the Amitges spiers and the Travessani spiers. It runs between 1,866 m of altitude, a little lower (N) of the Ernest Mallafré refuge, and 2,748 m of the Contraix pass.

Itinerary

Day 1: Planell d’Aigüestortes – Estany Llong shelter – Colomina shelter Distance: 16km | Elevation gain/loss: 950m+/ 380m- | Effective time: 6-7h

Meet your guide at Boi. Presentation & personal equipment  revision. After breakfast we will go by taxi to the Planell of Aiguestortes from where we will start the trekking route.We will pass by the Estany Llong Refuge 1,985m. We will continue going up towards the Agulles de Delluí and we will pass through the Delluí pass at  2,557m. From there the route descends towards the carrilet, the remains of an old wagon that transported materials through hydroelectric constructions at the beginning of the 20th century. We will finally arrive at  the Colomina Refuge 2,420 m. where we will spend the first night.

Day 2: Colomina shelter – JM Blanc shelter
Distance: 10,0km | Elevation gain/loss: 600m +/ 600m- | Effective time: 3-5h

On this stage we will submit a  peak of the Peguera valley like the Saburó peak and  will finish finish the descent discovering the characteristic hydroelectric systems of the national park

We will start the stage with the spectacular Pas de l’Ós (Bear Pass). We will continue to the  Saburó  pass at 2,667 m. From where we will summit the Pic de Saburó 2,906 m, offering breathtaking views. After the summit, we will descend to Josep Maria Blanc refuge  at 2,350 surrounded by a spectacular landscape and lakes where we will spend the night.

 

Day 3: JM Blanc shelter – Amitges shelter
Distance: 13km | Elevation gain/loss: 950m+/ 920m- | Effective time: 6h

We will start the day ascending the Monestero pass at  2,715 m, from here we will have the option of summiting the Monestero peak (2,877 m) or the Peguera ( 2,982 m). We will descend through the vast Monestero valley to the Ernest Mallafré shelter ( 1,950m), where we will surround the iconic Sant Maurici Lake. The final climb will bring us up to Amitges shelter (2,380m) where we will spend this night surrounded by the spectacular Agulles d’Amitges.

Day 4: Amitges shelter – Colomers shelter
Distance: 12km | Elevation gain/loss: 600+/ 850m- | Effective time: 6h

We will start the day with the ascent to the Port de Ratera pass (2,550m. From here we can summit Tuc de Ratera (2,862m). At this point we will visualize the Ruda Valley and descend to the Saboredo Refuge (2,310m). Final climb to the spectacular Coll de Sendrosa 2,451m and descent to the Colomers Cirque where we will find the Colomers Shelter at  2,130m.

Day 5: Colomers shelter – Ventosa Shelter
Distance: 15km | Elevation gain/loss: 1000m+/ 960m- | Effective time: 6-8h

Today we will go into the great Colomers Cirque. We will start the day ascending to Port de Caldes pass at (2,567m). We will then cross the Port de Rius (2,475m) to descend to the Restanca shelter at 2,010m.From here we will make our way up  to Port de Rius or climb the Coll de Tumeneia 2,603 m. Both options will bring us to Ventosa i Calvell shelter ( 2,220 m).

Day 6: Ventosa Shelter – Estany Llong Shellter – Planell d’Aigüestortes
Distance: 12km | Elevation gain/loss: 770m+/ 1100m- | Effective time: 8h

Today is the last day of the route  where we will meet the famous Coll de Contraix (2,747m), the highest pass of the entire crossing. Then we will start the descent to the Refuge d’Estany Llong 1,985m. From the shelter, we will continue to the Plainell d’Aiguestortes (1,850m) where we will take the 4×4 taxi back to Boí.
